The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, meaning it is the day of the least sunlight all year. After the Winter Solstice, the days grow longer until the Summer Solstice June 21st, when the days start to become shorter again.
In 2019, the Winter Solstice will occur at 9:19pm MST on Saturday, December 21st.
As it rotates around its axis, the earth isn't straight up and down — it is actually tilted 23.5 degrees. This tilt makes the sun appear to move in the sky through the year. The tilt also creates the seasons we experience during the year.
The Solstice is a moment, a passing, a turning point. The word literally means "sun standing" – the day when the sun appears to stop moving in the sky and turn back in a slow journey towards summer. It has been celebrated for thousands of years by countless civilizations as a time to reflect, remember, and give thanks. While it marks the beginning of the winter season, the Solstice offers the paradox that when we feel times are darkest, that's the sign that our journey towards light has begun. This year's Solstice is particularly special in that it coincides with a full moon. The full moon light shines bright into creation, illuminating all that is good, all that is hopeful, and all that is becoming. A new chapter awaits as you take each step with fresh eyes, an open heart, and a courageous spirit.
May you make the most of this special day in whatever way feels best. Enjoy this special guided meditation and our favorite rituals to help you slow down and tune in.
