It could be that every election has its share of contention, but we sure can't think of an election we've lived through that brings with it so much emotion and energy as this fall's U.S. presidential election. As part of our effort to stay as informed as possible, we each made a commitment to watch at least one full day of the Democratic and Republican conventions. It wasn't always easy, but we did it! In this week's episode, we discuss our reaction to both conventions and also the broader concepts behind those reactions.
More than ever, we believe the country is starving for positive visions about what is possible. Critics are numerous and cynics are all around, but vision seems to be in short supply.
In the past, we've shared our view that leadership and government are two different things. The government has a role in creating (or hindering) change, but the government doesn't really lead. Rather, leaders show government what needs to be done.
Now more than ever, we need leaders at all levels of society and in every corner of community. We need people who will help us find commonalities, common ground, and consensus. That means allowing ourselves to see the world along multiple dimensions, understanding the power to choose our own viewpoints, and being willing to envision – and work – to manifest something better than what we can see.
