The Autumn Equinox is upon us. Join us as we slow down, reflect, and celebrate this special time of equilibrium and transition.
The equinox is the day when we experience equal hours of day and night. This occurs twice a year, in spring and fall.
On the equinox, for a brief moment, the tilt of the earth as it orbits the sun sits directly above the Equator, and thus daytime and nighttime are in balance across the planet. On the Autumn Equinox – or more correctly, the "Autumnal Equinox" – the North Pole begins to tilt away from the sun, and cooler temperatures arrive in the Northern Hemisphere. Likewise, warmer temperatures arrive in the Southern Hemisphere.
The exact date of the equinox changes each year because the time it takes the earth to orbit the sun is slightly more than a year. In 2024 the Autumn Equinox takes place at 7:43 am Central time on Sunday, September 22, 2024.
The name "equinox" comes from a Latin word that literally means "equal" and "night." In a spiritual sense, it has long been celebrated as a time of harvest, a time of recognizing the abundance in our lives, and a time of reaping the rewards of the seeds we've planted in the past.
Throughout human history, people have celebrated the sacred symbolism of this day. Structures as varied as Stonehenge, Angkor Wat, Chichen Itza, and Mnajdra Temple were all built in part to help people honor the equinox.
