In 2019, the winter solstice arrives on Saturday, December 21, at 11:19 p.m. EST. It marks longest night and the shortest day in the northern hemisphere.

On this auspicious day of stillness, we invite you to stop, to pause, to breathe, and be.

What is the Winter Solstice?

The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the day with the least amount of sunlight all year. After the Winter Solstice, the days begin to grow longer until the Summer Solstice on June 21st when the days start to become shorter again.

Why does it happen?

As the earth rotates around its axis, the earth is actually tilted 23.5 degrees. This tilt makes the sun appear to move in the sky through the year and is the reason we experience seasons throughout the year. 

What does the Solstice mean?

The Solstice is a moment, a passing, a turning point. The word literally means "sun standing" – the day when the sun appears to stop moving in the sky as it turns back in a slow journey towards summer. The winter solstice has been celebrated for thousands of years by countless civilizations as a time to reflect, remember, and give thanks.

The winter solstice offers us the gift of experiencing darkness and light, something that resides in each one of us as human beings. When we step into the void of darkness, we can trust we are safe, we are ok, we are growing, we are becoming. As we rest in the belly of darkness, the light will come and it will illuminate our sight, our seeing, our knowing, and our way.

Winter Solstice Meditation, Rituals, and Reflections

Set Space

Setting your sacred space (internally and externally) is a powerful step to connect with your intentions.

  1. Create a peaceful environment with music and privacy. Sit in a comfortable position and light a candle.
  2. Close your eyes and begin to focus on your breath. Notice how it feels to inhale and exhale. Quiet your mind by focusing only on how it feels to breathe, in your unique way.
  3. Invite your higher power - whatever you name it to be - Source, God(s), Universe, Nature, Science, etc. -  to be present with you. Open your eyes whenever you feel ready.

Set Your Intention

Setting intention is different than setting goals. A goal is the destination you want to arrive at; an intention is the experience you want to have while you walk your path. Intention articulates the feeling you want to experience throughout your day, your meetings, your conversations, your projects, and your adventures. Intention expresses the motive of where you are coming from. When you set intention, you set an internal compass for your experience while surrendering how you get there. This solstice, ask yourself:

  • What is my intention for the coming year? 
  • How do I want to feel on December 21, 2020 as you look back on your year?

Release What No Longer Serves You 

  1. Build a small fire, either in your fireplace or in a contained bowl. Cut pieces of paper that you can write on and have a journal and pen by your side.
  2. Ask yourself, what beliefs, behaviors, and relationships no longer serve me? Write them down on separate pieces of paper. Review them and ask, “Am I willing to let these go?”
  3. Make a pile of the papers that you are willing to release. Sit with them and thank them for giving you the wisdom you needed to grow. If you’d like, you can use the technique called Ho’Opono Pono (I am sorry, please forgive me, I love you, thank you). Then, when you are ready, take each one (individually or all at once) and burn them in your fireplace or a bowl, releasing their energy into the ethers.

Write A Manifestation Letter

  1. Set your sacred space (see above).
  2. Gather a few pieces of paper, a pen, and an envelope. 
  3. Date your letter December 21, 2020.
  4. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Imagine it is a year from now and you have the ability to look back in time to see and feel what you experienced. Imagine your hopes and dreams coming true. Imagine what you want to experience as if, with the snap of your fingers, you could manifest anything you want. Imagine your heart's longing coming true. What do you experience? What do you feel? What happens as a result? Feel yourself smiling. Feel yourself experiencing joy, happiness, connection, healing, prosperity – whatever you desire. 
  5. When you are ready, open your eyes, grab your pen, and write:
    "Dear <fill in your name>,  as I look back on 2020, I am so grateful for….” and write down all of the things you are thankful for experiencing (as if they have already occurred). Be specific and allow your passions to be known to you. Emphasize how you FEEL, for it is the feeling that attracts what we experience.
  6. Write for as long as you feel complete.
  7. When you are finished, place your letter in an envelope and self address the envelope (put your name and address in the return address place as well).
  8. Seal the envelope and place it in a safe place where you will remember to retrieve it a year from now. Or, you can send it to us to keep safely for you at HeartSpace, 4343 Highway 224 Suite 203, Park City, Utah 84098 and we will send it back to you before December 21, 2020.
