How To Cope With Holiday Stress

Are the holidays relaxing for you? Or stressful?

"The holidays are such a grind."

In our work with conscious leaders like you, we hear that comment again and again. Even the most calm, mindful leaders discover that moments meant for relaxation can unexpectedly turn into periods of tension and stress. Easy conversations become heated. Get-togethers become obligations.

It all adds up to a lot of pressure.

Here are a few ways to step back from stress and renew your enthusiasm for the holidays.

Take Stock of What Inspires You

List what is fulfilling and energizing in your life and what is depleting and discouraging. What do you notice? Are there patterns you are ready to move past? Are there common threads to what is motivating? Make a list of what is working and what isn't. Awareness is always a powerful first step!

Find Points of Alignment

It is easier than ever to find things to argue about. Disagreements aren't just a major cause of holiday stress – they cheat us of opportunities for connection and community. Practice something different with the people around you. Start with what you have in common. That uncle you always argue with? Think to yourself, "There are many ways we are connected." That neighbor who always wants to talk about the election? Think, "There is more that unites us than divides us."

You don't have to convince anyone of anything or submit to being convinced yourself. But you don't have to keep emotional separation in your heart, either.

Get Outside

You don't need a month-long sabbatical or a trip overseas to tap into your inner peace. When you find yourself feeling crowded or tense, step outside into nature. Slow walks in the open air have a profound ability to offer perspective. Yes, you can even excuse yourself after the family's holiday meal to walk off your dinner – and the stress. Get outside and watch new perspectives open up.

Practice Gratitude

Especially this time of year, gratitude is the reset superpower. What are you grateful for? Acknowledge the blessings and gifts in your life, and watch them grow.

We all need to hit the reset button every so often. Developing a regular practice of stepping back from stress will keep you refreshed, alive, and fulfilled.
