Rebuilding the Event Space

June 10, 2020

We're writing to ask for your perspective and input on an industry that is near and dear to Plenty: the event space. At Plenty, we've helped hundreds of organizations design, produce, and grow in-person events to engage constituents, create positive change, and raise millions of dollars for charity.

As we live through a paradigm shift confronting racism, inequities, and a global pandemic, we're still in the midst of an economic crisis of staggering proportions. While some industries have shown themselves to be COVID-proof, many others have been decimated. From food service to tourism to hospitality, entire industries have been shut down.

Perhaps the hardest hit has been the event industry. Most major events, including sporting events, concerts, fundraisers, graduations, and athletic contests have been postponed or cancelled entirely. Just today the city of Chicago announced that the legendary Taste of Chicago and Lollapalooza festivals are cancelled, adding those events to a massive list including the Olympics, the Boston Marathon, every major summer music tour, most large fundraising events, the MLB, and the NBA.

The impact is massive and sad as many event professionals make a living in the off-season in the hospitality and restaurant space, which has been equally hammered.

Gathering together is a fundamental part of who we are. We're a communal species. In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, the protests against racism and police brutality have reminded the world that coming together for issues we care about creates change. Gatherings help us speak our truth, grieve, and remember; help us share and celebrate; help us express joy and community.

Dedicated to growing communities of care, we at Plenty are proud to have teamed up with our friends at Lennd, Event 360, and OP3 to launch an Event Confidence Survey. We've developed a simple, powerful survey to help event professionals and the public understand the views of their peers and make better decisions, together.

Our hope is to administer this event industry survey and analysis on a quarterly basis, in order to provide you with peer-to-peer insight and views of the event space that you can use as you readjust your plans and make new ones.

The event world is filled with some of the most resilient, entrepreneurial individuals and companies on the planet. That spirit is embedded in our industry and our everyday life. However, we are facing a level of uncertainty that we’ve never seen before. It’s hard to know which end is up. Now more than ever, we need to help each other through these turbulent times.

Will you take a moment to give us your perspective? Together, we can rebuild the confidence in gathering together again, the tools to do it safely, and the optimism we all need to see the process through.

Your voice matters. Thanks so much.

You can find the brief survey here.
